What is Kindy?
Kindergarten, known as kindy, is a part-time educational program for children in the year before Prep (the first year of school in Queensland). Kindy is a place where your child will learn through play experiences and interactions that support their early learning, wellbeing and development. By participating in kindy, children develop a love of learning and are supported with their transition to Prep. Queensland Government-approved kindy programs are delivered by a qualified early childhood teacher. Kindy programs can be offered at early childhood education centres; selected rural and remote and other selected state schools where there have been barriers to access kindergarten; and by distance education or eKindy for some children who cannot access a centre.

Learning at Kindy

Kindy provides young children with opportunities to:
  • use language to communicate ideas, feelings and needs
  • make friends, interact and cooperate with others
  • identify issues and develop problem solving skills
  • become more confident and independent in their abilities
  • connect with, explore and contribute to their world
  • build their knowledge and explore new ideas, helping to build their confidence.
Free Kindy from 2024 !

The Queensland Government is making kindy free for all Queensland families. Kindy will be free for eligible-aged children who attend a government-approved program offering free kindy from 1 January 2024. This is 15 hours per week, 40 weeks per year, of free kindy taught by a qualified early childhood teacher. Families can choose kindy in a sessional kindergarten or kindergarten in a long day care. In Queensland, children can attend kindy in the year before they start Prep.

Each service is different and some may have a waiting list, so it's a good idea to speak to your chosen service about the best time to enrol your child. Your child must be 4 years old by 30 June in the year they enrol to participate in kindy.

Letter from the Centre Manager

Welcome to another exciting edition of the Kidi Kingdom Child Care Hillcrest Newsletter!

Firstly, I would like to welcome all our new friends that have joined the Kidi Kingdom Hillcrest family. Thank you for choosing and entrusting us with the care.

We have all been so busy at the centre in the past few months with the centre calendar events, national and international celebrations and most importantly observing and encouraging the children with their interests, independence, learning and individual development.

Recently, we had our centre photo day. With your child/ren photos taken for the year individually and with their class. We hope you all liked your childrens photos, they all turned out amazing.

The children had a lot of fun participating in the trick or treat activities as we celebrated halloween, glad to see so many dressed up for Halloween and also day for Daniel. A special thank you to all our families who contributed to our donation box on the day for Daniel, much appreciated and a great way to contribute to our community. As we begin to move closer to the end of the month with Naidoc week celebrations and also recycling we have created some good recycled items to display around the rooms.

Our aim is to provide a balanced learning environment that incorporates all developmental aspects and opportunities for each individual to develop skills, knowledge and interests through their experiences and learning. We believe we provide a welcoming and positive learning environment where our children can feel comfortable and secure in the absence of their family.

Please like our Facebook page and we always appreciate our loyal families helping our centre by sharing your positive experiences to the local community by writing a quick Google, CareForKids or Facebook review. Thank you for the families that have already taken to the time to write a review.

Kind Regards,
Julie Hunter

Message from the Educational Program Leader

Dear Valued Centre Families,

In the past few months our team of educators have engaged the children in experiences in their rooms to celebrate the different events that have occurred throughout the months of September and October whilst continuing to encourage growth, creativity and independence in the children. This is through exploring their curiosity, widening their imagination and observing their interests.

We have been focusing on extending each child's interest, ensuring the room routines continue, updating educate daily and ensuring weekly programs focus on the merging skills and interests of the children. We will continue to observe the children as they engage in play with others and form great relationships with their peers and educators, while expanding on their learning and growing milestones.

As the Educational Leader I am committed to ensuring our programs and learning experiences are of the highest quality and the children are gaining and developing lifelong skills.

We look forward to making positive relationships with our families and welcoming your feedback into our programs.

Kind Regards, Ms Cheri.

Early Learners Room

Dear Valued Families of the Early Learners Room.

We are excited to share with you the latest events and highlights in the Early Learners room for this term. A special welcome to our new friends Chloe and Adam to the Early Learners family. It is great to see all our friends contribute in making Chloe and Adam feel so welcome as they explore their new surroundings.

The children have been very busy in the past few months celebrating numerous events and working towards their individual milestones, skills and developing knowledge. Our main interest in the month of September was extended from our "Best Friends Day". The children participated in different experiences but one that was most valued was "Baking Friendship Cake". We all shared the "Love" emotion by helping each other with the different steps of baking a cake.

Our main focus in the month of October was learning about animals around the world. Exploring the different animals that live on a "Farm" to "Ocean" animals and lastly "Australian Animals". We explored the different sounds each animal makes and the different names, all whilst having so much fun.

Our main focus in the month of November was the intense weather pattern change around the world. From "Desert" hot conditions to "Ice" cold conditions. This was a great extension from the animals around the world.

We look forward to another wonderful term together here in the Early Learners room.

Please be mindful of the hotter weather coming in now and wearing sun smart clothing for your child. We encourage all children to wear shoes for outdoor play.

Kind Regards, Miss Emily and Miss Alexis.

Junior Early Years Room

Welcome to Junior Early Years.

What a fantastic couple of months we have had in the Juniors Early YearsRoom. The children have been very busy learning about shapes and developing their independence. At the start of September the children explored child protection week where they participated in some experiences about who they feel safe with. We also explored emotions through art and craft experiences and role play.

During October we were all so excited and looking forward to celebrating Halloween and it was great to see all the different costumes and characters. We hope everyone enjoyed "Family Time" through the festive season.

As the children showed so much interest with shapes in the last month we decided to continue the children's interest with incorporating numbers with shapes. Whilst we extended the interest with numbers, we counted the seeds we planted in our vegetable garden. The children were able to participate in looking after our beautiful vegetables and sunflowers.

The children show great enthusiasm as we go out to the garden each week to check on their growth and the children take turns in watering the plants.

In the month of November our main focus will be "Recycling" where the children will be able to build on life long skills. Reduce, Reuse and Recycle - we will be learning about recycling.

Kind Regards, Ms Kylie, Ms Kara and Ms Verity.

Early Years Room

Hello and Welcome to the Early Years room.

What a great start to September with Child Protection Week. During this week we looked at who the children felt safe with, where their safe places were, who are safe and not safe strangers. As a group we talked about my body rules. This then led into children's feelings. During this time we looked at facial expressions through artwork and role play. During that week we also had "are you okay" day where the children talked about making sure that they understood their friends' feelings.

During the month of October the children showed great interest in exploring the garden, which took our interest into exploring fruit and vegetables. As we began looking at different types of vegetables and fruit, we looked at how they looked, felt, and tasted through craft and sensory activities.

When it was time for Halloween. The children all enjoyed getting to create spiders and other spooky things and explored some Halloween activities through cooking, as they made banana ghosts and chocolate spiders. During the Halloween week we also had Daniel Morcombe day where we dressed up in red and reflected on our stranger danger awareness.

Kind Regards, Miss Tia and Ms Wor.

Kindergarten Room

Welcome Families,

We have had a very creative and educational learning term. At the start of September we were working on our Father's Day art and craft projects. During the month of September our learning project was on 'the life cycle of a butterfly'. We enjoyed engaging in different crafts and learning about the different states of the life cycle. We also celebrated child protection week, where we created a kindness chain and talked about trusted adults. A couple of experiences we loved doing during the month included making pizza, learning about identity as we drew self portraits and completed an 'All about me questionnaire' and taking part in photo day.

During the month of October, we moved on to our new learning project: Our 5 senses. We learnt our sense of touch, taste, smell, sound and sight through numerous experiences and crafts. Some of these experiences included cloud dough, ice painting, foil painting, moon sand, water beads and our sensory table.

Also during the month of October, we celebrated grandparents day. It was great having morning tea and completing art and crafts with our grandparents. We also celebrated Halloween. We loved decorating our room with Halloween themed art and crafts and our glow in the dark jars. It was lovely to see our friends bring in halloween treat bags for everyone. We looked forward to dressing up for Halloween and going trick or treating to the other rooms with the Halloween bags that we made.

Next month, we will continue to take care of our vegetable garden. We visit the garden each week and water the garden. Our yams, carrots, tomatoes, zucchinis, spring onions and lettuce are growing well. We will also continue with our daily affirmations, learning our days and months through our daily calendar, graduation songs and show and tell. We are learning different skills including: social, fine, gross, communication, literacy and numeracy. It has been wonderful seeing all the different show and tell that the children have shared with us.

Kind Regards, Miss Aimee and Miss Regina.

Cooking with Children!

Sweet Potato and Apple Fritters.

How to Make this Recipe

● Peel and dice the sweet potato, and then cook until mashable. I did this step in the microwave. (Image 1) Drain off as much liquid as you can.

● Grate the apple (I used a box grater). (Image 2)

● Mash the sweet potato. (Image 3)

● Mix in the grated apple (Image 4)

● Add the flour, egg and sage in a large bowl to the sweet potato mixture.

● Mix until all combined.

● Grab tablespoonfuls and cook over medium heat with olive oil in a fry pan/ skillet.

● Flip when golden brown and cook until golden on the other side. Drain on paper towels.

Expert Tips and FAQs

The quickest way to cook the sweet potato is in the microwave, I just select "potatoes" and press go! That way they are cooked through for mashing.
