Article: Growing An Edible Garden For Children |
|
One of the
best ways to encourage children to grow a garden and to develop a
range of skills is to create an edible garden. An edible garden
is a garden that contains flowers, herbs, seeds, berries and
plants that can be eaten.
Designing an Edible Garden
Edible does
not have to be large. It can start small with a few pots and
containers, or even just a window box with a few herbs.
When planning
an edible garden, some suggestions include:
-
Space
- Where to create the garden? How big will it be?
-
Position - A sunny spot with easy access to water will
work well and partial shade.
-
Veggies
- What would you like to grow and eat.
What To Plant In The Edible Garden
When planning
what to plant in an edible garden, you can include:
-
Favourite fruits - vegetables, herbs.
-
Sensory
appeal - grow plants you like to see, smell or touch
such as herbs are a good example.
-
Climate
- consider which plants are best suited to the local
climate.
Herbs
-
rosemary,
basil,
chives,
sage,
mint,
oregano,
parsley,
thyme,
coriander.
Seeds and Berries
-
blueberries,
mulberries,
pumpkin and
sunflower seeds.
Fruits
- kiwi fruit,
strawberries and
passionfruit.
Veggie Garden -
Vegetables that are good choices and easy to grow include:
Beets, Carrots, Radishes, cherry
tomatoes,
strawberries, peas, lettuce, tomatoes, silverbeet, corn, capsicum, Beans.
Gardening
Activities For Children
Young children are curious and highly
motivated to learn new skills like gardening and cooking. With
adult encouragement in a safe, carefully prepared, and
supervised environment, growing and cooking abilities can
advance rapidly, aligned with age-appropriate activities:
Appropriate activities for two-year-olds include:
-
pushing
child-size wheelbarrows
-
watering plants with help from a
teacher
-
pushing large seeds, such as beans and peas, into the
soil
-
observing insects and ripening produce
Appropriate
activities for three-year-olds include:
-
mixing soil to prepare
garden beds
-
planting large seeds and seedlings
-
filling up
watering cans
-
watering plants
-
pulling weeds
-
observing
plant growth
-
comparing leaf shapes
-
describing the appearance
of fruits and vegetables
Appropriate activities for four- and
five-year-olds include:
-
shovelling compost and mulch
-
raking
soil to prepare garden beds
-
planting small seeds and seedlings
-
harvesting ripe produce
-
training and weaving vines onto a
trellis or fence
-
collecting seeds
-
filling up watering cans
-
watering plants
-
pulling weeds
-
identifying garden insects
-
weighing produce
-
comparing shapes and sizes of produce
-
observing insects and birds
-
drawing garden scenes or items
Creating an
edible garden enables children to develop sustainability
practices and brings an abundance of learning opportunities such
as understanding how food is grown, the lifecycle of a plant and
more! |

Message from the Educational Leader |
|
Welcome to all
our Valued Centre Families who have enrolled at Kidi Kingdom
Child Care Pimpama.
My name is
Miss Kajalpreet kaur and I am your Educational Leader for Kidi
Kingdom Child Care Pimpama. The educational leader has an
influential role in promoting positive outcomes for children and
families. Effective educational leadership builds the capacity
of educators by inspiring, motivating, affirming, challenging
and extending their practice and pedagogy. This joint endeavor
involves inquiry and reflection and supports ongoing learning
and professional development.
I will be
mentoring and supporting educators' understanding of educational
programs and practice, e.g. building relationships and
interactions with children to assist their learning through play
and leisure based programs; developing documentation that is
meaningful, relevant and promoting reflection on educators'
pedagogy and practice. Drawing on educators' strengths to
develop professional skills and confidence. Mentoring and
supporting educators to assess learning. Ensuring the assessment
and planning cycle is applied to each child and the program.
Assisting educators to understand and implement reflective
practice and leading critical reflection discussions to examine
policies, programs and practice. Talking to families about the
educational program. In our centre in these few months we have
celebrated many occasions together to create a beautiful
learning environment around children. They resource their own
learning through connecting with people , place, technologies
and natural and professed materials.
Our families
are happy going home at pickup time with their child with a big
smile on their faces which makes us more motivated to work. We
love the appreciation that we get from our Kidi Kingdom families
and the management team.
As an
educational leader I have shown some contribution in showing
respect for the environment in kidi kingdom and also motivated
my team for example: cleaning yards to make sure babies can play
safely without any hazard or risk. We as a team are trying our
best to provide children the best care they deserve to have.
We welcome
your feedback and will implement all your feedback as we are
aiming for your child to thrive and extend on their
developmental milestones whilst they are in our care at Kidi
Kingdom Child Care Pimpama.
Kind
Regards, Miss Kajalpreet Kaur - Educational Leader

Message from the Early Learners Room |
|
Dear
Families of the Early Learners Room,
In March,
the Early Learners room focused on nurturing a sense of
belonging among the children, fostering connections with
their peers and caregivers alike. Through various
collaborative activities and group discussions, the children
began to develop a strong sense of community within their
learning environment.
The month
of April brought forth a shift towards cognitive challenges,
with engaging activities designed to stimulate critical
thinking, problem-solving, and decision-making skills. These
activities encouraged the children to explore new ideas and
concepts, building a solid foundation for their cognitive
development.
As May
unfolded, the room transformed into a realm of imaginative
play, where the children delved into the world of
make-believe. From singing along to beloved nursery rhymes
to tenderly nurturing dolls, the children immersed
themselves in creative expression, igniting their
imaginations and fostering a love for storytelling and
pretend play. Through each month's focus, the Early Learners
embarked on a journey of growth, discovery, and boundless
possibility.

Kind
Regards, Ms Melinda and Ms Sinead - Early Room Educators.

Message from the Junior Early Learners Room |
|
Dear
Families of the Junior Early Learners Room,
Over the
past three months, we have implemented many learning
experiences in relation to colours, fruits, vegetables,
animals and plants. These experiences incorporated days of
the week, shapes, the alphabet (jolly phonics) and counting.
The children also engaged in their favourite story book.
Listening and singing rhymes are the foundation of our
spoken language, it enhances our communication skills
through rhythm.
Over the
next few months we will work on music activities,
international awareness, our families and also celebrating
Kidi Kingdom's calendar events such as Mother's Day, Family
Week and Reconciliation Week. We encourage parent
involvement as we believe that children develop at different
rates in the physical, social, emotional and cognitive
development and our families input can assist in
implementing many experiences to enhance the children's
interests at home and in the centre. We hope you and your
child will enjoy time with us as we explore lots of new
ideas, science experiments and learn real life skills such
as washing hands and self feeding.

Kind
Regards, Miss Sandy and Miss Manpreet.

Dear
Families of the Junior Early Years Room,
We would
like to start by extending a warm welcome to all our new
children and families who have started with us over the last
few months. It is wonderful to see everyone settling in and
starting to feel like our place is your place, connecting
and building relationships with each other and with the
educators within our rooms and center. It is always
exciting to receive great feedback from parents regarding
their children's developmental milestones, achievements and
progress as the children engage in quality play experiences
that keep them interested in exploring, creating and
developing a sense of belonging all while enhancing their
learning.
It has
been a busy few months in the Senior Early Years Room with
the children making new discoveries, accepting challenges,
celebrating achievements and building confidence and
independence as they explore through different learning
experiences and activities based around the many different
celebrations and events from around the world. Amazing wall
displays have been created within the room as the children
have been super creative from making four leaf clovers to
displaying a handprint wreath of poppies for Anzac Day. Then
there was Nature Play Week, a week of experiences related to
nature and exploring nature through different activities.
Nature play encourages children to see the natural beauty of
a place while exploring the outdoor environment , helping in
the garden and making artworks using natural materials.
Mother's
Day was an absolutely amazing day. Thank you to all the
mothers, grandmothers, carers and families that came to
celebrate here with us. Looking forward to a fun filled and
exciting month ahead. We value and appreciate all family
input. If you have any questions please come and speak with
us. There are some exciting things happening in the room so
stay tuned.

Kind
Regards, Ms Rebecca and Ms Kylie. |

Dear
Families of the Early Years Room,
In the
last few months, we have made great progress towards our
learning goals. We have planned an excellent program for our
children according to their interests and challenges. We
explored seasonal themes such as winter. Through these
activities, children learned about the changing weather
(cycle of life), the impact on native animals, and respect
for the country. Additionally, our cultural occasions have
helped children become aware of fairness. They understand
their reciprocal rights as they connect with and contribute
to their world. Children become stronger in their social,
emotional, and mental wellbeing, and teaching at this young
age can enhance a level of curiosity which helps them
explore their surroundings further. When children begin to
learn about the world around them, they understand what they
will need to do to grow and make the most out of the world
they live in.
In the
coming weeks, our children will continue to develop new
skills as they engage in learning experiences that support
their developing personalities. It's amazing that children
are so committed to these experiences at such a young age,
and we look forward to sharing these wonderful learning
developments and milestones with our families. If you have
any questions, please feel free to contact me at any time at
the center. We welcome your feedback and will implement all
your suggestions as we aim for your child to thrive and
extend on their developmental milestones while they are in
our care at Kidi Kingdom Child Care Pimpama.
Our future
projects include the following: Our theme will be "Hand
Hygiene." This will support the children in their learning
and foster social skills, cooperation, and sharing. Toddlers
can learn the importance of becoming strong in their
physical learning and wellbeing and increasing
responsibility for their own health and physical wellbeing.
We have
ample time to learn, so it will be a fun month! We will
learn how special we are in our very own way through the
influencing theme 'feelings'. After children learn how to
calm down and talk about how they are feeling, they can then
begin to problem solve. When children are able to problem
solve challenges, they are better able to focus on tasks,
learn, form friendships, and navigate social situations. We
will also learn how to identify letters and explore many fun
activities to help us learn the shape and sound of them.

Kind
Regards, Miss Kajalpreet.

Dear
Families of the Senior Early Years Room,
In April,
we welcomed our new Lead Educator, Ms. Fei. Ms. Fei brings
with her many years of experience in the early education and
care industry, both in Australia and New Zealand. The
children warmly welcomed her and embraced their new teacher.
During
circle time, we discussed our differences and similarities.
The children engaged attentively as Ms. Fei talked about how
each of us has a unique face, and how every child learns to
recognize and become familiar with different emotions and
expressions. The children also actively imitated the
teacher's gestures to express various emotions. In the arts
and crafts session, they showcased their unique styles by
drawing their own self-portraits.
We also
participated in an ANZAC Day commemoration activity. The
children paid close attention as "My Grandfather Marches on
ANZAC Day" was presented. Under the teacher's guidance, they
made "Lest We Forget" poppies together, each child using
their understanding to create a commemorative flower.
In the
month of May, as the weather has started to cool down
recently, we engaged the children in discussions about
weather and the changing seasons. This helps them strengthen
their awareness of the current season and the changes it
brings to the environment, such as leaves turning yellow and
plants bearing fruits.
Additionally, we read an online book together about "colour
blocking," which expanded the children's understanding of
how colors interact, such as blue and yellow mixing to
create green or red and yellow combining to form orange. The
children's quiet, eager eyes revealed their boundless
curiosity about the natural world around them.
To
celebrate Mother's Day, the children eagerly painted their
handmade creations with lovely pink colors. They used their
own hands to assemble their works, and despite any flaws,
they were filled with love for their mothers. Afterwards,
some children also used chalk to draw their favorite
expressions on the ground, including flowers, rainbows, and
adorable snails. Perhaps the children cannot yet create
perfect artwork, but these adorable little ones have already
expressed their love from their hearts.

Kind
Regards, Ms Fei and Miss Jenna.

Message from the Kindergarten Room |

Dear
Families of the Kindergarten Room,
Over the
past three months in the Kindergarten Room our young
learners have embarked on a journey filled with exploration,
discovery and hands-on experiences. Through the art of
baking, they have not only honed in on their Fine Motor
Skills but also learned valuable lessons about measurements,
following instructions and teamwork. As they molded and
shaped playdough, their creativity flourished allowing them
to express themselves freely while simultaneously developing
their sensory perception. In the realm of literacy, we
delved into the magical world of letters, journeying from A
to I. Counting became an exciting adventure as they eagerly
engaged in activities that introduced them to the
fascinating realm of numbers, laying a solid foundation for
mathematical understanding.
We also
took the time to commemorate ANZAC Day, instilling in the
children a sense of respect, empathy and gratitude as they
learned about the sacrifices made by brave men and women.
These past
months have been filled with laughter, curiosity and growth,
nurturing not just their minds but also their hearts as they
journey along the path of Early Childhood Education.

Kind
Regards, Miss Assra.

Message from the School Care Room |

Dear
Families of the School Care Room,
During the
month of April, we participated in some great adventures in
vacation care. Our excursions included nature walks,
bowling, catching a movie at the cinemas, and special
cooking classes at the center. These were wonderful
adventures shared with each other.
We are
encouraging the children to be respectful of each other
while engaging in experiences and to be more responsible
with their belongings. This has been successful in helping
the children develop more responsibility and care for their
personal and center items.
We look
forward to sharing new adventures for the next vacation care
session approaching in June. If our families have any
suggestions for vacation care, please do not hesitate to let
us know. We look forward to seeing you all for vacation
care. Please see our Center Manager to secure your position
for the upcoming school holidays.
