How to make a kids Vegetable Garden.

A home made vegetable garden designed for kids, provides healthy snacks while kids are on the go, as well as providing opportunities to learn the importance of where food comes from and how it grows.

Steps for building your family Veggie Garden

Locate the kids vegetable garden where they can reach it. The ideal position for the kids vegetable garden is in their play area.

Your kids will be able to conveniently work on their garden, make observations about what's growing well, and what needs some help and as importantly, take care of watering and weeding, as an extension of their play activities.

Vegetable gardens designed for kids, teaches ownership and responsibility. Give the kids ownership and responsibility for their vegetable garden.

Allow the child to select which vegetables are grown, encourage them to select varieties that can be picked frequently, and choose varieties that do Not have poisonous leaves. The kids vegetable garden should comprise varieties that provide easy and safe picking and grow all year round.

Options include lettuces, silver-beet, snow peas, beans and carrots to name a few. Ask your local garden centre for other options too.

At Kidi Kingdom we use our vegetable garden to extend children's learning's and understanding about science and nature... Including:

Planning... selecting varieties, working out best planting position, deciding on numbers of plants to be planted, drawing up garden plans and labelling diagrams.

Weeding... identifying and removing weeds, thinning out plants Pest Management... spotting bugs and slugs, identifying invader versus predator insects, picking invader insects off plants, spraying with organic sprays when necessary, catching caterpillars for their bug collectors. Following a watering schedule, checking when plants need extra water in hot weather.

Harvesting... observing ripening of plants, picking, eating and sharing produce.

Use kid-friendly gardening tools. Kids can use trowels and forks that have been designed for adults, but smaller handles and spades designed for children are easier for them to grip and wield.

Kids gardening tools are usually brightly coloured with cheerful patterns or smiley faces on them making the whole experience more enticing and enjoyable for the child.

With their own distinct tools, kids can also become responsible for cleaning and properly putting 'their own' tools away. So, apart from survival skills, healthy play snacks and planet-nurturing attitudes, dedicated vegetable gardens designed for kids, enable a wonderful sensory experience within a safe and playful environment. Until next time, happy planting!

Letter from the Centre Manager.

Dear our valued families of Kidi Kingdom Child Care Centre - Springfield.

I would like to use this chance to introduce myself to all the families, if I have not already stopped you in your tracks throughout the last couple of weeks. My name is Erika and I commenced with Kidi Kingdom in mid- September. I have had the privilege of working closely with children for a total of 8 years since commencing my career in 2011. Working in long care facilities in South Australia, Victoria, Western Australia and now settling in Queensland after almost 5 years.

For the last 18 months I have been working with Elite and Prestige Sales Agents for McGrath & Ray White franchises in the Real Estate industry. I chose to utilise the management skills I learnt throughout this time and have returned into the education side of Early Learning. As a parent myself, I have a strong understanding and passion for quality and efficient care for children in a long day care setting. Stimulating and effective interactions are key to successful relationships with children, child satisfaction, and ongoing support with children’s learning.

Whilst I am transitioning as Centre Manager and learning all needs of the children, families & service, I do appreciate your patience during this time. However, please do not hesitate to give me a call or email with any concerns you may have and I will endeavour to help as promptly as possible.

Regards,
Erika Eagleson
Centre Manager

Throughout the month of October our Early Learners room will be included in a Nature Scape excursion, so please be sure to return your permission forms!Kit & I are always happy to communicate with parents in regards to any of the children’s current interests and incorporate them into our weekly program. Please let us know if there is anything further you would like us to extend on with the children.

Thank you Miss Taneeka and Miss Kit.

JUNIOR EARLY YEARS - Dear Families of the Junior Early Years, It has been a busy month with lots fun, laughter and we have been learning so much! We have seen the children enjoy their role playing with the toy dolls, feeding them, bathing them and patting them to sleep. This has been wonderful to watch as we have had our peers become big sisters and brothers. We would like to welcome Hudson, Ayra & Amyra to our room, we hope you and your family enjoy your time with us! However, we have had to say goodbye to Manrose and Martin who have moved into the next room and we wish them all the best on their learning journey. We have also introduced lots of different books for our children to choose from. There are many advantages and benefits of reading and not only does reading enhance a child’s vocabulary, it also helps them understand how to read and write in their younger years of schooling. We believe in incorporating as much reading into our routine as possible. Below are some benefits;

  • Reading is important to develop language skills.

  • We develop an imagination and creativity.

  • Books are a form of entertainment.

  • Reading together helps to create bonds that make them feel safe, secure and supported within their environment.

If you have any favorite books and would like us to read them please bring them in or let us know what books you are reading at home and we can read them here too. As we continue to build connections with each child and their families, we want to focus on their development to build on their relationships with educators and other children within the centre. To help with this we are engaging children’s interest through music and movement, building with blocks, hand and eye coordination, social and emotional wellbeing within the room and just how each child is as an individual. We are still building on children’s interest by exploring more ways of interacting with the toys. To do this we build on their strength and skills that they have to control their motivation and their engagement for that toy.

Thank you Miss Chrystle and Miss Natalie.

EARLY YEARS - Welcome to another month in the Early Years room! Welcome to another month in the Early Years room! It has been an exciting month in the room as we go back to exploring our 5 senses with a sensory project. The children have enjoyed a variety of sensory related experiences from sensory walks, taste and water play. This month we have participated in child protection week. We had the Fire Department come out to the centre and we even got to see how they suited up in their uniform ready for any emergency. We are extremely proud of how quickly and efficiently the children responded when we conducted a Centre Fire Evacuation drill! During month we also had our yearly photographs done, that are currently being finalised and should be with you shortly. We would like to welcome Ayanda to our classroom and welcome back Keziah who has moved up from the Junior Early Years room upon returning from holidays. We would also like to wish a big happy 3 rd birthday to Indy and Caleb! If your child has or is wanting to begin toilet training, please provide extra spare clothes and underwear as we are happy to help them with this journey.

Thank you Miss Angela, Miss Mahla and Miss Jessica.

SENIOR EARLY YEARS - Dear Families of the Senior Early Years Room. Welcome to the Senior Early Years room, we can't believe that we are in September already! In the room over the last couple of weeks the children have been taking an interest in dinosaurs through some of the activities that we have been doing in the room. I have been focusing on each child's learning development, with shapes, patterns, numbers, colours and identifying new ways to make activities a learning experience. The children are encouraged to learn multiple tasks and identify other learning strategies through play. These activities provide and encourage children to have one on one learning with their educators and to also incorporate group interaction to enable the children to work together as a group and take turns within a team aspect. To extend on the children’s interest with dinosaurs, we have organised and put together an ‘adopt a dinosaur’ program for the children to encourage families to take home a dinosaur and create a sense of home in the room. The children are also very excited that they can take something from care and implement their learning outside of the centre.

Thank you Miss Jess and Miss Alyssa.

PRE-PREP - Dear Families of Pre Prep, Welcome to another fun filled month in the Pre- Prep Room. This last month we have continued with learning the Japanese language, Germs, Pollution in our environment and how to look after our own belongings. QKLG Identity – Acting with increasing independence and perseverance.

Our Vegetable garden at the service is growing extremely well due to the care the children are showing when tending the garden. Our tomatoes have just finished, and it has made way for the sugar peas to grow a little larger now. We will be going to Bunnings soon to purchase some more flowers and seedlings for our garden as the radishes are also due to come up. QKLG – Connectedness – Showing respect for environments – caring for the kindergarten and exploring interactions between people and environments.

Literacy in the room currently is concentrating on Upper and Lower-case letter recognition, this is important for children to recognise these as they begin to write. We are also clapping out how many sounds are in our names this enables us to practice learning to spell when we get to school. Miss Desleigh is encouraging children’s spelling by using some sight word cards to enable children’s interests and needs to be catered for. QKLG- Communicating – Exploring and engaging with numeracy in personally meaningful ways.

Numeracy in the room is concentrating on number recognition and counting correctly. Miss Desleigh has made up some games to help with developing this important skill. We also use it when we are cooking and measuring items and planting out our seedlings in the garden. QKLG- Communicating – Exploring Numeracy in personally meaningful ways.

With the children getting closer to starting school next year we are implementing a few changes into the children’s routines to help them prepare for their next big adventure in their lives. We are preparing them to be independent and have the resilience necessary for big school. To help with this we are encouraging the children to be responsible for bringing a hat and water bottle each day.

A reminder that Graduation is on the 27 th November 2019! Please keep this date free  We are very busy practicing our songs and dance routines and hope you and your family really enjoy the evening.

We would also like to give a warm welcome our new friends Ashaz, Zafyrah, Ethan R, Ella and Zara to our room.

If you have anything you think we would like to include in our program or can help in anyway, we would love to hear your input.

Until next month warm regards from Miss Desleigh and Miss Hope.
