1.How to make a kids Vegetable Garden.

A home made vegetable garden designed for kids, provides healthy snacks while kids are on the go, as well as providing opportunities to learn the importance of where food comes from and how it grows.

Steps for building your family Veggie Garden

Locate the kids vegetable garden where they can reach it. The ideal position for the kids vegetable garden is in their play area.

Your kids will be able to conveniently work on their garden, make observations about what's growing well, and what needs some help and as importantly, take care of watering and weeding, as an extension of their play activities.

Vegetable gardens designed for kids, teaches ownership and responsibility. Give the kids ownership and responsibility for their vegetable garden.

Allow the child to select which vegetables are grown, encourage them to select varieties that can be picked frequently, and choose varieties that do Not have poisonous leaves. The kids vegetable garden should comprise varieties that provide easy and safe picking and grow all year round.

Options include lettuces, silver-beet, snow peas, beans and carrots to name a few. Ask your local garden centre for other options too.

At Kidi Kingdom we use our vegetable garden to extend children's learning's and understanding about science and nature... Including:

Planning... selecting varieties, working out best planting position, deciding on numbers of plants to be planted, drawing up garden plans and labelling diagrams.

Weeding... identifying and removing weeds, thinning out plants Pest Management... spotting bugs and slugs, identifying invader versus predator insects, picking invader insects off plants, spraying with organic sprays when necessary, catching caterpillars for their bug collectors. Following a watering schedule, checking when plants need extra water in hot weather.

Harvesting... observing ripening of plants, picking, eating and sharing produce.

Use kid-friendly gardening tools. Kids can use trowels and forks that have been designed for adults, but smaller handles and spades designed for children are easier for them to grip and wield.

Kids gardening tools are usually brightly coloured with cheerful patterns or smiley faces on them making the whole experience more enticing and enjoyable for the child.

With their own distinct tools, kids can also become responsible for cleaning and properly putting 'their own' tools away. So,apart from survival skills, healthy play snacks and planet-nurturing attitudes, dedicated vegetable gardens designed for kids, enable a wonderful sensory experience within a safe and playful environment. Until next time, happy planting!

Early Learners - Dear Families of Early Learners we would like to welcome all our new friends to our Early Learners Classroom. This month we have been learning about Spring as the warmer weather approaches and flowers and plants start to bloom. The children have been busy finger painting their own gardens and creating beautiful artwork flowers. Children have enjoyed being able to get their hands messy while learning all about Spring. Miss Christina will be returning from maternity leave on the 1st October and we look forward to welcoming her back.

Thank you, Miss Kassandra and Miss Stephanie.

Junior Early Years - Dear Families of Junior Early Years. Another busy month in the JEY Classroom, we investigated and created some science activities during science week engaging and discovering how to change water containing some of our small animals into ice. We then got to smash one of the ice cubes and melt the other one in the sun as we all watched the hot sun melt the water to reveal the animals. We also watched the volcano erupting in the sandpit and made goop which was a very different sensory activity. We also celebrated Book Week reading a different book each day and interacting with props that were provided by Miss Julie. We got to dress as our favourite character on the last day. Reading with your child is one of the most important and satisfying things you can do and improves your childs imagination, concentration and communication skills as well as it being fun and special time spent with your child. The children all enjoy story time on the mat each day! We are still practicing counting and number recognition along with shape and colour recognition too! This will be ongoing as intentional teaching is part of our group time activities each day. We will be exploring the life of a pirate over the coming weeks reading books treasure hunting and lots of other fun learning activities involving pirates and their adventures.

Miss Julie and Miss Benita.

Early Years - This month in the early years room, the children have had a fun filled month. Continued to exploring their interest in transport, the children have now started exploring a new interest about the weather. Miss Kyra and Miss Raquel had a discussion with the children about the different seasons of the year and what all the seasons represent as now it's spring, we have started doing lots of fun activities for spring we have started exploring insects and different flowers in our outdoor gardens.

Kind regards Miss Kyra and Miss Raquel.

Pre Prep - Dear Families of Pre-Prep Classroom, we would like to welcome back our two friends Jack and Jessica from their long holiday. This month we joined the exciting Book Week Celebration at our Hillcrest centre. Every day the children enjoyed reading/listening to their favourite stories. The most memorable stories to them were the Gruffalo, Pinocchio, Peter Pan, the Hungry Caterpillar and the Wizard of Oz. The children loved acting out the characters in the story that they liked most. All the moral lessons in the stories were inculcated in the young hearts and minds of the children. The children's sense of pride and confidence were also deeply developed as they performed their song and dance moves from their favourite nursery rhymes and jingles. Some simple riddles also had captured their great interests. The most exciting part was the culmination where the children dressed up with their favourite story characters. The children were so proud showing off their beautiful costumes while talking about who their costumewas about in front of their friends during our yarning circle. Another meaningful activity that we celebrated was the Child Protection Week. The children learned a lot of survival practices to protect themselves from undesirable people like the strangers and bullies. They also learned some safety tips while at play, in public places and in cases of an Emergency. During our final activity the children were having a role play on how to apply basic first aid in case someone will be hurt or will have an accident in the future. This latter part of Term 3 our focus is to enhance the development of their fine motor skills in order to make them readier for the next school year. We received lots of positive feedbacks from our parents whose children successfully passed during their school interviews. Well done guys! Your teachers and your Kidi Kingdom Family are so proud of you.

Thank you Ms Nim and Ms Kara.
